Mutate and evolveĪs you progress through the story, you’ll encounter various challenges. I was consistently eager to see the next major plot point unravel and you can’t ask much more from a story than that. Regardless, I will say that the story did an impeccable job of keeping me engaged. I think that the narrative of The Eternal Cylinder is its main selling point, so I’d be doing both you and the game an injustice by ruining that. I don’t want to go too in-depth regarding the story, as spoiling it would be a shame. Those looking for more of a sandbox experience will likely be left disappointed. This helps the narrative to flow more smoothly but limits player choice. Despite its somewhat open-world design, areas can only be explored when it is necessary for the story. It is worth knowing that The Eternal Cylinder is very linear. They may start off at the bottom of the food chain, but this unique ability has the potential to turn them into the most powerful of creatures. By consuming certain items, a Trebhum can mutate and gain new powers. The Trebhum are a highly adaptable species best known for their ability to rapidly evolve. Large towers are triggered, which hold the Cylinder in place for a period of time, but a permanent solution still evades the Trebhum. Only one thing is clear, the so-called Eternal Cylinder is a constant threat that will kill everything if it isn’t stopped. The Eternal Cylinder takes place in a strange foreign world ruled by unnatural forces. It’s this difference that elevates The Eternal Cylinder to levels Spore could only dream of. It may use evolution as a core mechanic, but unlike Spore, this game has an in-depth story that is driven by said evolution. A deep narrative-focused title that pushes the creativity of game design to its limits. Instead what I’ve found is something even better. After playing the full game for this review, I can now confirm that is not the case. For the first time in 13 years, it felt as though a potential successor to Spore had surfaced. To see creatures other users have created and the environment they have set for their creatures will make your jaw drop in awe.First revealed at gamescom over two years ago, The Eternal Cylinder piqued my interest as an especially unique-looking adventure game. To enjoy this part of the game, it is best to be connected online. You might easily lose your way among the countless stars that surround you. Space exploration is the most enjoyable, yet the most confusing part of Spore. Once you conquer all cities you move into space age. You are required to conquer all cities and let me assure you it’s a piece of cake! Religious cities will have vehicles which will convert other vehicles into your own, while military ones will have aggressive vehicles which are out to destroy anything in its way. Similarly you can design your own vehicles as well and there can be different vehicles depending upon the nature of the city. In this stage you are also presented with the option to design buildings in your city, again we are presented with the same intuitive interface we saw in Creature Creator. Every time one would mate or move from one evolution stage to another, the good ol’ Spore creature creator pops up and you can make changes to your creature’s body and buy body parts with the DNA points which you gain every time you eat.Ĭivilization stage plays out like the game Civilization, the only difference is that it’s not turn based unlike the popular franchise. And grow I did, and thus I got out of the slush to face the brave new world. Soon its evolution meter was full and it evolved into a creature with a pea-sized brain, something is better than nothing you see.Īt this stage, I was told that I could now ‘grow’ a pair of legs with the DNA points I gained my eating. Then I got for it a pair of horns and let it bully everyone around. As it ate, it bloated in size till it made other single cell organisms feel insignificant. Soon my creature, or should I say my single cell creature was thrown into an ocean of life where it swam eating other organisms. Why? No clue, may be I like Salman Khan, find hunting cool! Non-vegetarian I said without second thought. Vegetarian or non-vegetarian I was asked. The first thing I realized was that evolution was all about choices organisms make through the ages! The first choice I had to make was regarding my dietary habits.
